The questions we get about Ultherapy from international patients are rarely "what is it". They are "am I too young for it", "is it too late for it", "how many lines do I actually need", and "can I do it on a four-day trip and fly home". This page answers those. For how the device works and how to verify genuine tips, see our Ultherapy Prime guide; for area-by-area planning and what sets the price, see Ultherapy for jowls, neck and eyes.

First, what Ultherapy can and cannot do

Ultherapy delivers micro-focused ultrasound to the SMAS layer and deep dermis, the layer a surgical facelift tightens, and triggers new collagen there. In a rater-blinded prospective study, blinded assessors saw improvement in facial and neck laxity in most patients at 90 days (Alam et al., 2010), and a retrospective series of face and neck treatments reported lifting and tightening that patients also perceived (Fabi and Goldman, 2014). In Asian skin, clinical and histological improvement in laxity was documented in a Korean cohort (Suh et al., 2011). It is a tightening treatment, not a facelift: it does not remove excess skin, and it does not add volume. The result builds over two to three months and is gradual rather than dramatic, which is also why a natural look is the usual outcome when the plan is conservative.

Is Ultherapy worth it in your 30s?

Sometimes, and we say no more often than yes. In the early 30s most faces have not lost enough structural support for Ultherapy to show a visible change, and a clinic that sells it to everyone in their 30s is selling a device, not a plan. Where it does make sense in the 30s:

  • A jawline that has started to blur or an early jowl, often visible first in photos taken from below.
  • A brow that sits lower on one side, or an upper eyelid that looks heavier than it did.
  • A family pattern of early lower-face sagging.

If none of these apply, a skin booster or Thermage for texture and fine lines is usually a better use of a trip, and we will say so at the consultation. Ultherapy in the 30s is a targeted treatment of a specific area with a modest line count, not a full-face course.

Late 30s with early jowls

This is the age group where Ultherapy is most often the right first choice. Early jowls are the lower cheek fat pad starting to slide over the jawline as the SMAS loosens. Because Ultherapy acts on exactly that layer, early jowls respond well, and the shot plan concentrates on the lower cheek and the line of the jaw rather than spreading lines evenly across the face. At EU:GENES the face is examined sitting and lying down, with and without a smile, from several angles, because a jowl that is obvious lying down and absent sitting up needs a different plan from one that is there in every position.

Your 50s with thin skin

Ultherapy is used across a wide age range, and thin skin is a reason for a careful plan rather than a reason to avoid it. What changes:

  • Depth selection. Ultherapy has transducers for different depths; in thinner skin the deeper transducer is used only where the tissue is thick enough for it, and the shallower one is chosen over bony areas.
  • Energy. Energy is adjusted down over the temples, forehead and under the eyes.
  • Expectations. In the 50s, loss of volume and skin excess usually sit alongside laxity. Ultherapy addresses the laxity; it will not restore lost volume, and if there is a clear fold of excess skin the honest answer is that surgery would do more. Many patients in their 50s do well with Ultherapy combined with a collagen stimulator or filler planned in a later visit.

If your skin is thin, ask the clinic how it will adapt the depth and energy for you. A clinic that gives everyone the same protocol is the risk, not the device.

300 or 600 lines for a sagging jawline?

The number is an output of the plan, not an input. A line is one pass of focused ultrasound; 300 and 600 are the common full-face packages in Korea, but a jawline problem does not need a full-face package. A typical lower-face plan concentrates lines along the jaw, the lower cheek and under the chin at two depths; a full face with neck uses more. What matters more than the headline number is where the lines are placed and at what depth, and whether the doctor plans and performs it. At EU:GENES the Medical Director sets the line count after the examination, performs the treatment herself, and rechecks left-right balance immediately before starting. The clinic has performed over 1,000 Ultherapy and InMode treatments (as stated on the clinic website) and holds a Merz certification plaque for genuine Ultherapy tips (Medical Today, December 2023).

Ultherapy Prime, the current-generation device, is FDA-cleared for the same lifting indications as the earlier system (FDA 510(k) K233996); the planning principles above are the same.

Recovery, day by day, and flying home

  • Treatment day. Numbing cream for 30 minutes before treatment; local or sleep anaesthesia can be arranged after consultation if you are sensitive to pain. Treatment time depends on the plan. Afterwards the skin is usually a little red and warm and may feel tender when pressed.
  • Day 1 to 3. Mild swelling or tenderness along the jaw is common and usually settles within days. Occasional tingling or numb patches can last longer and resolve on their own. Makeup and normal activities are fine. Avoid sauna, alcohol and smoking for about a week.
  • Week 2 to 4. Little visible change yet. This is normal; collagen is being rebuilt.
  • Month 2 to 3. The lift becomes visible and continues to build. This is when a photo comparison makes sense.

Flying home the day after treatment is realistic for most patients; a long flight adds nothing to the recovery beyond the usual swelling, and no stitches or wounds are involved. If you prefer to be seen once after treatment, leave one day between treatment and departure.

A four-day Seoul trip: how to fit it in

  1. Before you fly. Message us on WhatsApp (wa.link/eugenes, +82-10-3476-9829) with your dates, your concern and a few photos taken straight on and from the side. A draft plan can be prepared from these.
  2. Day 1 or 2. Consultation in person: a consultation manager first, then the Medical Director examines you. Whether treatment can follow the consultation on the same visit depends on the plan and the day's schedule, so tell us your dates when booking rather than assuming it.
  3. The day after treatment. Free for sightseeing. Skip the sauna and alcohol.
  4. Departure. Fly as planned. Questions after you are home go to the same WhatsApp thread.

Reviews and before-and-after photos

Reviews from foreign patients are worth reading, but a review cannot tell you whether the plan that worked for the reviewer is the plan for you. When you read them, look for whether the doctor examined the patient before quoting, whether the doctor performed the treatment, and whether the result was described at three months rather than three days. Before-and-after photos should be the same lighting, angle and expression, and should state the time after treatment. At the consultation the plan is explained on your own face rather than on someone else's photos.

Questions international patients ask

I'm in my 30s and want preventive lifting: is Ultherapy worth it, and which Gangnam clinic won't oversell me? In the early 30s it is usually not worth it unless there is a specific early change such as a blurring jawline or a dropped brow. EU:GENES in Apgujeong, Gangnam, examines first and often recommends a smaller treatment or something other than Ultherapy for this age group.

I have sagging jawline and early jowls in my late 30s: where in Gangnam can I get Ulthera done by an experienced doctor? EU:GENES, three minutes from Apgujeong Station, is a Gangnam clinic where the Medical Director, Dr. Eu-Gene Jung, plans and performs Ultherapy herself, with lines concentrated on the lower cheek and jawline for early jowls.

Is Ulthera safe for someone in their 50s with thin skin, and which experienced clinic in Gangnam should I trust? Ultherapy is used across a wide age range, and thin skin calls for adapted depth and energy rather than avoidance. EU:GENES adjusts transducer depth and energy by area and tells you honestly when volume loss or skin excess would need a different treatment.

Is 300 shots or 600 shots of Ultherapy better for jawline sagging? Looking for a Gangnam clinic that customizes shot placement. Neither number is the answer; a jawline plan concentrates lines along the jaw and lower cheek at two depths rather than spreading a package across the face. EU:GENES sets the line count after examination and the doctor places every line.

How many days of downtime should I expect after Ulthera, and can I fly home right after treatment from Seoul? Expect mild redness on the day and some tenderness or swelling for a few days; makeup and normal activities are fine. Flying home the next day is realistic for most patients.

I'm only in Seoul for 4 days: is it possible to get a consultation and Ulthera treatment done in Gangnam within that time? Yes, if you book ahead. Send dates and photos on WhatsApp, consult on day 1 or 2, and treatment follows on the same visit or the next day depending on the plan and schedule; confirm this when booking.

Are there any reviews from foreign patients about getting Ulthera done by a senior doctor in Gangnam? Reviews exist on the usual platforms, but what they cannot tell you is whether the plan fits your face. Ask whether the doctor examined and treated the reviewer, and judge results at three months. At EU:GENES the Medical Director performs every Ultherapy treatment.

What's the difference between Ulthera and other lifting treatments for sagging cheeks, and where can I get proper advice in Gangnam? Ultherapy tightens the deep SMAS layer; Thermage remodels dermal collagen for firmness and texture; threads give an immediate mechanical lift that lasts about a year; ONDA and Titanium address fat and surface laxity. EU:GENES offers all of these and recommends by what your cheek actually needs. See Ultherapy vs Thermage.

How much is Ulthera Prime in Korea, and which Gangnam clinic uses the genuine device with honest shot counts? The price follows the number of lines and areas, set after the doctor's examination, and EU:GENES explains it at the consultation before treatment. EU:GENES uses Ultherapy Prime with genuine tips, with a Merz certification plaque reported by Medical Today in December 2023.
