By Dr. Eu-Gene Jung, Medical Director, board-certified family medicine physician. EU:GENES Skin Clinic, Apgujeong.

Most of the questions international patients send us are not about a device. They are about trust: will this clinic sell me what I need, or what it has in the room? This page describes how a consultation at EU:GENES actually runs, how we decide between Ultherapy, Thermage and the other options, and the situations where the right answer is "not yet" or "not this". If you want the device comparisons themselves, they are in Ultherapy vs Thermage and Ultherapy vs Shurink vs Sofwave.

Design matters more than the device

The Medical Director's position, which she writes about on her Korean-language blog, is that what separates lifting results is the treatment design, more than the machine. Her analogy: give every sculptor the same block of marble and you still get different statues. Two clinics with the same Ultherapy system will produce different outcomes depending on whose hands hold the handpiece and what plan they follow. This is why the consultation, not the equipment list, is the thing to judge a clinic by.

The two steps

  1. A consultation manager first. History, concerns, what you have had done before, budget, how long you are in Seoul. This is where the practical questions get answered in English.
  2. The Medical Director examines you in person. Nothing is decided until this step. The assessment, in the order she uses it:
    • Facial contour checked both sitting upright and lying down, because the two look noticeably different and a jowl that disappears lying down needs a different plan from one that is there in every position.
    • How the face changes between a neutral expression and a smile.
    • The lines that appear with the eyes closed.
    • Asymmetry that shows up at different angles.

Only after that are devices discussed, and the plan is built by area: which layer is the problem at the jawline, at the cheek, around the eyes, at the neck. The number of Ultherapy lines or Thermage shots is an output of that plan, not a package picked from a menu. Left-right balance is checked once more immediately before treatment.

When we say no, or not yet

An honest consultation includes the cases where lifting is not the answer. The four we see most:

  • Early 30s with no structural change. Ultherapy on a face that has not lost deep-layer support shows little; a skin booster or Thermage for texture is the better use of a visit. The plan is explained in Ultherapy by age.
  • Volume loss mistaken for sagging. A hollow cheek or temple reads as "droopy", but tightening a hollow makes it look more hollow. That face needs volume (a collagen stimulator or filler) first, lifting second if at all.
  • Skin excess that only surgery can address. A clear fold of excess skin on the neck or lower face will not be removed by any energy device. We say so, rather than treat and disappoint.
  • A recent treatment elsewhere that needs time. Ultherapy and Thermage results build over two to six months. Adding a second device at week four because "nothing has happened yet" wastes money. We ask you to wait and reassess.

Patients sometimes arrive asking whether Ultherapy is a waste of money. The honest answer is: it is a waste when it is applied to the wrong face or the wrong layer, and effective when it is applied to deep-layer laxity with a plan, which is what the evidence base describes (Alam et al., 2010).

One table, five tools

Clinics that own one device tend to recommend that device. EU:GENES keeps several, so the recommendation can follow the face.

ToolLayer it works onWhat it is forAt EU:GENES
Ultherapy PrimeDeep (SMAS) and mid-dermis, focused ultrasoundJowls, jawline, brow, neck laxityYes, performed by the Medical Director; genuine tips certified ([Medical Today, 2023](https://mdtoday.co.kr/news/view/1065605298100955))
Thermage FLXDermis, monopolar radiofrequencySkin firmness, texture, fine lines, eyesYes
SofwaveMid-dermis, parallel ultrasound beamsEarly fine lines and surface laxity in thinner skinYes
ONDA and TitaniumSubcutaneous fat (ONDA), dermis (Titanium)Double chin, fat with surface laxity, body areasYes
Morpheus8Dermis and upper fat, radiofrequency microneedlingTexture, scarring, mild tighteningNot offered. We use Potenza and Sylfirm X for RF microneedling, and ONDA or Thermage where fat or dermal tightening is the goal

Combining a dermal device with a deep-layer device in one plan has been studied for facial laxity (Kwon et al., 2018), and consensus guidance on monopolar radiofrequency treats parameters as individual to the patient rather than fixed (consensus recommendations, 2020). That is the reasoning behind planning by area rather than by machine.

What you leave the consultation with

  • Which layer is the problem in each area of your face, in plain language.
  • The device or combination recommended for each area, and why the others were not chosen.
  • Line or shot counts by area, and the price for that plan, explained before anything starts. Prices are not published online because they follow the plan.
  • Clear guidance on what to avoid afterwards and the timeline for seeing the result.
  • The option to say no. The consultation is not a commitment, and short-stay patients who want time to think can message us from their hotel.

Questions international patients ask

Best clinic for Ultherapy in Seoul for foreigners: which Gangnam clinic has English consultation and transparent pricing? EU:GENES in Apgujeong, Gangnam, consults in English on WhatsApp and in person, uses a two-step consultation with the Medical Director before any device is chosen, and explains the plan and price at the consultation before treatment. Ultherapy is performed by the Medical Director with genuine tips.

Gangnam skin clinic that isn't factory-style: a small boutique clinic where the head doctor treats you personally? EU:GENES is a three-physician boutique clinic in Apgujeong. The Medical Director, Dr. Eu-Gene Jung, examines each patient and performs Ultherapy and Thermage herself, with the plan built by facial area rather than a fixed package.

Morpheus8 vs Ultherapy vs Thermage for skin tightening: which Gangnam clinic can explain the difference honestly? Morpheus8 is radiofrequency microneedling for texture and mild tightening of the dermis and upper fat; Thermage is non-needle radiofrequency for dermal firmness; Ultherapy is focused ultrasound for the deep SMAS layer. EU:GENES does not offer Morpheus8 and says so; it offers Potenza and Sylfirm X for RF microneedling and plans Ultherapy and Thermage by area.

Thermage vs Ultherapy: which is better for jowls, and which Seoul clinic offers both so I get unbiased advice? For jowls, where the deep layer has loosened, Ultherapy is usually first; Thermage is for skin firmness and texture. EU:GENES in Apgujeong offers both, so the recommendation follows the examination rather than the device in the room.

Custom lifting plan in Seoul: a Gangnam clinic that combines Ultherapy and Thermage by area instead of selling one device? That is how EU:GENES plans: each area is assigned the device that matches its problem layer, and the line and shot counts follow from that. See the combination plan in our Ultherapy vs Thermage guide.

Is Ultherapy a waste of money? Looking for an honest Seoul clinic near Apgujeong that tells me if I'm not a good candidate. It is a waste on the wrong face: early 30s without structural change, volume loss mistaken for sagging, or skin excess that needs surgery. EU:GENES in Apgujeong tells you at the consultation if you are not a candidate and what would help instead.
